Philadelphia Eagles Re-Sign DeSean Jackson With Five Year Deal

The Philadelphia Eagles have made DeSean Jackson’s wish to stay with the team under an extended contract a reality, singing the two-time Pro Bowl receiver to a five year deal worth $51 million.

Originally tagged as a franchise player Jackson was to earn $9.4 million next season however the team instead decided to secure Jackson for the long-term.

It’s been an uphill battle between DeSean and the Philadelphia Eagles, last season he held out at training camp because he wanted a long-term extension, then Jackson was deactivated for one game because he missed a team meeting.

In today’s announcement Eagles coach Andy Reid noted:

“We are thrilled to be able to keep one of the NFL’s top playmakers in Philadelphia. DeSean is a gamebreaker. He has the speed and ability to score from anywhere on the field, and he has proven himself to be a big threat for our offense.”

Over his career Jackson has amassed 229 receptions for 4,085 yards and 21 touchdowns over a four year period. Jackson also holds the team record with four punt return touchdowns.

During the 2009 and 2010 seasons Jackson, 25 was named to the Pro Bowl although he missed in 2011 because of a dip in his performance which many analysts believe occurred because of contract distractions.

After hearing of his singing Eagles tight end Brent Celek tweeted:

“DJACC!!!! Congrats buddy @DeseanJackson10.”

The Eagles have busy this week, signing Trent Cole to a new four-year contract extension through 2017. According to sources Cole’s extension is worth $48.525 million of which $15 million is guaranteed. Cole is also a two-time Pro Bowler.

Do you think securing the futures of DeSean Jackson and Trent Cole were smart decisions on the part of the Philadelphia Eagles front office?
