Lori Anne Madison, 6, To Be Youngest Ever in National Spelling Bee

Lori Anne Madison, a 6-year-old girl from Woodbridge, Virginia, is headed to the National Spelling Bee after winning a region spelling bee in her home state, Fox News reports.

For a shot at the National Spelling Bee, Lori Anne had to best 12 other competitors from elementary and middle schools, all of which were older than her–some twice as much. Madison won the regional spelling bee in Virgina with the word “vaquero”, which is Spanish for Cowboy.

“It’s hard to put into words really.. but at the least I felt great,” she said in an interview with Fox affiliate WTTG-TV.

Competing against spellers that are as much as twice your age may sound intimidating for a 6-year-old, but Madison said that she was used to it. “I was confident because I have been in spelling bees with older kids before and I judge them by who they are, not about age,” she said.

Lori is home-schooled by her parents, and she says that it’s all thanks to them–and her impressive memory–that she was able to win the regional spelling bee and move on to the Scripps-Howard National Spelling Bee.

“My parents quiz me, I read lists and I have a really good memory,” she said.
