State Of Emergency Declared In Baltimore: National Guard To Step In To Help Police [Videos]

According to live coverage from ABC News, a state of emergency has been declared in Baltimore. Governor Larry Hogan has declared the state of emergency after a request from Baltimore City Police Department. The National Guard has been activated to help answer the violence that erupted after the funeral of Freddie Gray, the 25-year-old man who died in police custody with an unexplained spinal injury.

The same live news report showed looting at a Save-A-Lot on Pennsylvania Avenue in Baltimore, and the reporter had to drive away quickly as looters threw things at his car.

There were injuries sustained by a minimum of seven police officers after looting and rioting erupted in the wake of Gray’s funeral, according to WATE-TV. Certain cops had injuries that included broken bones, with reports of one police officer being “unresponsive,” according to Eric Kowalczyk, the Baltimore police captain.

The funeral of Gray drew thousands in Baltimore, including those who didn’t know Freddie but wanted to show their support for the man and the message of non-violence that Gray’s family is urging the public to spread, as reported by USA Today. On Monday, throngs of folks turned out to New Shiloh Baptist Church for the funeral, and afterward, the state of emergency was issued in the evening hours, after vehicles were torched, unlawful disorder reigned, and a CVS store, along with others, were set on fire.

The state of emergency allows the National Guard to join the Baltimore police in trying to keep the peace in the area. As the time grows later and the area turns to night, officials are concerned about increased looting because of the darkness.

As reported by the Inquisitr, protests broke out on Sunday in the area of Camden Yards, whereby Baltimore Orioles baseball fans were urged to remain inside the ballpark to remain safe.
