How Many iPhones Did Apple Sell Last Quarter? The Answer Might Shock You

It’s no secret that Apple’s quarterly financial reports are the stuff of corporate legend, and this most recently completed quarter was nothing different. Apple posted yet another record-breaking quarter, with gargantuan iPhone and Mac sales. But it wasn’t all good news.

Apple moved 61.17 million iPhone units in the three months ending March 31. That’s a 40 percent jump over Apple’s iPhone sales for the same period a year ago, and Apple pulled in $13.57 billion in profit for the quarter, according to Apple news site AppleInsider.

Apple’s iPhone sales were down from the previous quarter, in which Apple sold 74.5 million iPhone units, but that’s not surprising, given that the previous quarter included the holiday shopping season. What is surprising, though, is is that iPhone sales remained so strong, even given the regular drop-off following the end of the year.

The strong iPhone sales are due in large part to Apple’s continually growing presence in the Chinese market. The popularity of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus appear to have put to rest one of the long-running debates on Apple versus its Android-based competitors. The iPhone’s continuing sales growth seems to indicate that a good many consumers were in fact just waiting for Apple to come out with a larger version of its iPhone, and the release of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus may well have taken a big bite out of the sales of Android-based devices from Samsung, HTC, and others.

Apple also saw surprising growth in its Mac computer sales, as that unit moved 4.56 million notebooks and desktops. That’s a 10 percent year-over-year increase.

It wasn’t all great news, though. Apple’s iPad segment continued to see its numbers drop, moving 12.6 million units, or 23 percent fewer iPads than Apple sold for the same quarter last year. While the iPad remains the top-selling tablet in the world, the continuing slide in sales has some thinking that Apple should be worried about the segment. To that end, Apple may be preparing to refresh its iPad lineup later this year, as rumors hold that the Cupertino tech giant is readying a larger-screened iPad Pro to tackle the enterprise segment.

As to the Apple Watch, there’s still no word on sales specifics, which is not surprising, given that the Apple wearable only launched late in this most recent quarter. Apple will likely reveal some sales numbers at this year’s Worldwide Developer Conference, with hard numbers coming in Apple’s July financials.

Even without solid numbers, it’s looking like the Apple Watch is performing quite well. Apple CEO Tim Cook said that consumer response to the wearable has been “overwhelmingly positive,” and Apple is making adjustments to meet demand for the models consumers want.
