For several weeks people have taken to the streets in Baltimore to protest the death of Gray, who died in police custody earlier this month. Witnesses say they saw Gray writhing in pain as police arrested him, and some even pleaded with police to give him medical attention.

But Gray received no medical help from police, and later died of his injuries. Family members say he had a broken neck and crushed voice box.

In recent days the Freddie Gray protests have turned violent, with some of the Baltimore riot being captured on dramatic video.

Over the weekend, video emerged showing protesters near Camden Yards destroying cars and even turning on some innocent bystanders.

Police said there were 35 arrests, but noted that most of the protesters remained calm and didn’t resort to violence.

“A small contingent of yesterday’s protesters caused violent disruptions downtown and in West Baltimore last night and early this morning after what had been mostly peaceful protests throughout the day,” the police department said.

But as more protesters took to the streets on Monday, a handful again turned violent, throwing rocks at police and breaking windows. Live coverage of the Baltimore riot is being shown on a number of news outlets (links to streaming video below), showing the ever-growing crowd.

Many have tried to put a stop to the violence. Gray’s family members have appealed for peace, and a coalition of local leaders are also calling for calm.

“From the days of our nation’s earliest civil rights sit-ins, Baltimore has a long tradition of peaceful and respectful demonstrations,” a coalition of about 25 local religious leaders said in a statement. “Together, as leaders of different faiths in our city, we join Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake and call for our citizens to honor and continue that history as we pray for the family of Freddie Gray.”

Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake also said the city has been working hard to keep tensions at a minimum.

“It’s a very delicate balancing act, because while we tried to make sure they were protected from the cars and the other things that were going on, we also gave those who wished to destroy space to do that as well. And we work very hard to keep that balance and to put ourselves in the best position to deescalate, and that’s what you saw.”

But despite the efforts of police and protest leaders, the Baltimore riot could turn even more violent. Reports claim that gangs in Baltimore have entered a partnership to “take out” police officers.
