‘Take Your Kids to the Park… And Let Them Walk Home By Themselves Day’ Being Organized By Free-Range Parents

“Take Your Kids to the Park… And Let Them Walk Home By Themselves Day” is being organized by Empower Kids Maryland and free-range parents, Danielle and Alexander Meitiv.

As the Inquisitr previously reported, the Meitiv’s were deemed guilty of “unsubstantiated” child neglect for letting their children, 10-year-old son, Rafi, and 6-year-old daughter, Dvora, walk home without any adult supervision.

The investigation started on December 20, 2014, when Rafi and Dvora were approached by police as they walked to the park. After the police officer escorted the children back to their home, CPS was notified to look into the situation. They discovered that Danielle and Alexander are firm believers in promoting a free range parenting style, according to Fox News Insider.

“We don’t feel it was appropriate for an investigation to start, much less conclude that we are responsible for some form of child neglect,” Danielle Meitiv said. “What will happen next time?”

“We’re just doing what our parents did. It was considered perfectly normal just one generation ago,” Danielle Meitiv added.

Now, with the help of Empower Kids Maryland, they are hoping other parents will join in on the free range parenting style and let their children walk home alone from the park on May 9.

“When did we stop being a community of responsible adults all looking after each other and each other’s kids? When did we stop being a village – and start becoming a fearful nation, where two kids walking home from the park alone is suddenly cause for a 911 call and a CPS investigation?” the group’s website said.

“We don’t know exactly when it was, but it’s time to start swinging the pendulum back toward being a village. After all, it’s never been a safer time to be a kid in America. Responsible kids walking around our neighborhoods should be the norm – not the exception. That’s why we’re organizing Take Your Kids to the Park… And Let Them Walk Home By Themselves Day.

“Here’s how it works: at 10 am on Saturday, May 9th, we take our kids to the local park… they make some friends, play around for a few hours, and if you think they’re ready, let them walk home by themselves. For Silver Spring and Takoma Park parents, we hope you’ll meet us at Ellsworth Park in Downtown Silver Spring, where the Meitiv kids were playing just before someone called 911 to report that they were ‘unattended.'”
