Lorraine Lorimer, 45, married a childhood sweetheart. They had briefly dated as teenagers and, three years ago, again struck up a romance. They tied the knot in June 2013. According to Lorimer, Alan O’Donnell was “kind, caring, and attentive” and anxious to get married. They each had their own house and were saving for a joint house. But, she said, according to the Mirror, that he became a Dr. Jekyll-Mr. Hyde personality. She stated that “[w]ithin weeks of walking down the aisle, he became dark, really controlling and jealous.” The relationship turned violent and abusive, and the mother of four from Yoker, Glasgow, feared for her life. One of her children, a 14-year-old, was with O’Donnell. She had headed to bed early after watching television, left her phone downstairs, and was unaware who she calls her “monster husband” left hundreds of messages and incoming calls telling her she was disrespecting him by ignoring him. Lorraine says O’Donnell was high on booze and diazepam when he came home and attacked her. He went to the house at about 5 a.m. to take the 14-year-old out. When she refused to drink a whiskey with O’Donnell, he flipped out. She states that he even threatened her life. She said the following, according to the Daily Record.

“Alan was my husband and someone I trusted who attacked me, beat me, kicked me, punched me, held me down and tried to pour bleach in my mouth then threatened me with a knife–but he will probably be living back around the corner in 18 months….When I said I was going to bed, he refused and we ended up in the living room where he knocked me on to the couch and wouldn’t let me get up. He went berserk and grabbed me by the hair, pulled me into the kitchen and then ripped off my pyjama top so I was left on the floor wearing only my knickers. He started kicking and punching my head and, in an attempt to get away, I grabbed his leg and he fell but then suddenly he had a rolling pin out of the kitchen drawer and started hitting me on the head….I could feel the heavy wood bouncing off the bones of my skull then he picked up a grater and held it to my face, threatening to tear it down the side of my face. I screamed and begged him to stop but he then pinned me down with his knees on my shoulders….every day I have to walk into my kitchen where I lay on the floor for three hours, covered in blood and bleach.”

She noted that she is scared to walk around outside as he lived nearby and was afraid to work. She said that “[a]fter he was arrested, he was given bail and allowed to live just around the corner so every waking moment I was terrified he would come back to get me.” Lorimer also indicated that O’Donnell had behaved erratically previously and stated the following.

“But whenever he was away from me, he would text me really strange demonic things about the Antichrist and when I confronted him he just passed it off as a joke….That was the worst night of my life and it left me scared to look in a mirror or even leave the house on my own….I loved him, I trusted him and he beat me within an inch of my life and left me lying on the floor for dead. Tell me-– where is the justice?”

O’Donnell originally faced murder charges but was convicted of the lesser charge of assault and jailed for three years, which Lorimer doesn’t feel is sufficient in light of the severity of the attack. The sentencing judge, Judge Lady Rae, told O’Donnell: “No remorse has been shown for what happened.”

Do you think that the sentence is sufficient? If not, what sentence would you impose on O’Donnell?

Luckily, not all marriages end in such violence. Some marriages show that good and love still exist in the world. Danielle Josey Davis is living proof of this. She was married only seven months when a horrible motorcycle crash left her husband, Matt Davis, on life support, in a coma. To make it worse, doctors told her that there was a 90 percent chance that he would never wake up, and that she should let him pass. But she refused to give up. Danielle kept him on life support and brought Matt home, and she and her mother cared for him. Then a miracle happened. Three months after the horrific motorcycle crash, Matt woke up and began more rehabilitation, according to an article in the Inquisitr. [Photo by Larry W. Smith/Getty Images]
