The road leading up to the release of Rihanna‘s new album, R8, hasn’t been a smooth ride. Her latest single had originally dropped out of the top 20 on Billboard’s Hot 100 after three weeks, leading many to predict that her upcoming album, RH8, will be a flop. However, Rihanna may be having the last laugh.
On Billboard‘s Hot 100 this week, “B***h Better Have My Money” rebounds to No. 17. This has been helped by a sudden increase in iTunes sales. Even if Rihanna’s latest single doesn’t make the top ten, her next single, “American Oxygen,” has already received positive reviews. Jim Farber from the New York Daily News is very impressed with Rihanna’s latest single.
“Oxygen offers an un-ironic endorsement of the American dream, saluting unending possibility and upward mobility… The music mirrors the triumphant message. It’s a grand ballad,” Farber claims.
Rolling Stone notes the political undertones of the “American Oxygen” video.
“Rihanna dropped the patriotic music video for her new single on Tidal, the streaming music service she co-owns along with more than a dozen other music megastars. The video has a quasi-time capsule feel, juxtaposing patriotic imagery with archival footage of the United States’ most noteworthy historical events. The singer performs her new single alone in front of the backdrop of an American flag.”
Fans on Twitter, who bashed “B***h Better Have My Money,” are praising “American Oxygen.”
Rihanna recently did a raunchy photo shoot and interview for V Magazine. The Huffington Post quotes part of the interview.
“The thing that made me fall in love with [‘FourFiveSeconds’] is the juxtaposition of the music and the lyrics. When you read the lyrics it’s a completely different song than what you are hearing. The music is easygoing, but the lyrical content is very loud and in your face. In performing this, the key was to make sure the aggression wasn’t lost.”
Besides pumping out music, Rihanna recently had time to serve as a bridesmaid in a beach wedding. Pop Sugar has all the details.
“Rihanna took on bridesmaid duties at her assistant’s wedding in Honolulu on Monday. Looking picture-perfect in a lavender Badgley Mischka dress, the singer made her way up the grass aisle while holding a bouquet of fresh flowers. Meanwhile, bride Jennifer Morales wore a sleeveless white gown, and the groom donned a classic tux.”
There still is no release date set for RH8, but let’s hope it will happen soon. 2015 is bound to be a great year for Rihanna and her fans.
