UPDATE, 4/18 11:40 pm EDT: Here are the winning Powerball numbers drawn on Saturday night: 1322232931 Power Ball 17. The Power Play number was 3.

The jackpot stands at $50 million because there was no winner on Wednesday, April 15, after the previous drawing saw one ticket in Florida match all six numbers for an $80 million jackpot prize.

Incredibly, that Florida winning ticket was the fourth winner in just nine drawings, which is a truly odds-defying run considering that the chances of matching all six numbers on a single Powerball ticket are a mere one in 175,223,510.

So far in 2015, the Powerball lottery has sold 771,352,727 tickets and has seen seven winners in total. But mathematically, there should have been 4.4 winners in that many tickets, so Powerball is well ahead of its schedule, at least based on the odds.

Of course, the Powerball lottery started the year off selling more than a half-million tickets — 517,989,251 to be exact — before seeing a single winner — and at that time, it saw not one winner in a single drawing, but three.

That spell led to a jackpot of $564.1 million going to three different winners, all of whom had chosen the same six-number combination, in a drawing on February 11 that sold a whopping 189,525,246 tickets.

That number represents almost 25 percent of all Powerball tickets sold so far this year — but massive ticket sales generally accompany massive jackpots, and that jackpot was the fifth-largest in United States lottery history, and second-largest in the 23-year history of the Powerball drawing.

Powerball replaced the first multi-state lottery game, Lotto* America, in 1992. The Lotto* America game debuted in 1988.

But the first Powerball drawings were very different than the high stakes games seen today, and which players can watch live online every Wednesday and Saturday. The first minimum Powerball jackpot was just $2 million. Today, Powerball starts off at $40 million.
