Street Fighter X Tekken on Xbox 360 Lacks Local Co-op for Online Play

The PlayStation 3 version of Street Fighter X Tekken already had a bit of a leg up over the Xbox 360 with the inclusion of exclusive characters, but it looks like the PlayStation 3 advantage extends further than that.

Street Fighter X Tekken fans who purchased the game on the Xbox 360 reported that the game’s tag team modes didn’t allow for two players on the same console to play online at once. In the PlayStation 3 version, this is possible by hitting start on the second player’s controller during character select.

To make matters worse, it’s looking like the ability to play online with a local friend won’t be patched into the Xbox 360 version. Capcom’s Christian Svensson offered an explanation from Capcom’s “feedback team” over on Capcom Unity, saying: “The difference has to do with how XBL differs from how it handles online and offline accounts.”

Svensson continued: “The reason for this difference is because of the architecture differences between gamertags and PSN IDs. I’m not sure of the technical details, but basically it amounts to: Sony made it so you can mix and match online and offline, and Microsoft made it so you can’t.”

As Joystiq pointed out in their report, Capcom’s explanation doesn’t exactly hold up too well when you consider that Mortal Kombat on the Xbox 360, which also had a tag team online mode, allowed for two players on the same console to do battle over Xbox Live.

Svensson seemed equally confused about Capcom’s explanation, and promised to dig further. We’ll let you know when Capcom has more to say.
