The 2014 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 gave them all a run for their money. Chevy’s iconic sports car bested the Porsche 911 Carrera S and the Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 with a time of seven minutes and 37.40 seconds.

According to the automaker, that lap time was a little slow, thanks to rain that started to fall on the track by the end of the lap. The Z/28 even beat out its sister model, the Camaro ZL1, by four seconds.

The New York Daily News reports that Camaro chief engineer Al Oppenheiser explained, “One of the challenges of testing at the ‘Ring is that the track is so long that conditions can change radically in a single lap.”

The chief engineer went on to say, “Based on telemetry data from our test sessions, we know the Z/28 can be as much as six seconds faster on a dry track.”

The 2014 Camaro Z/28’s improved speed is due to its 505 hp engine, as well as its chassis, which is 300 pounds lighter than the typical Camaro , notes Motortrend . The car completed 10 of those hours at the ‘Ring, with every lap coming in under eight minutes, even with traffic.

Chevy’s lap at Nurburgring was part of the manufacturer’s “24-hour test” to measure the Camaro’s durability. During the test, the car ran a day’s worth of laps at several tracks, with only brake and tire changes allowed. Considering the data from the lap at the ‘Ring, we can bet Chevy is proud of its latest muscle car.

While the Camaro enjoyed a lap time of seven minutes, 37.40 seconds, the Porsche 911 Carrera S had a time of seven minutes, 37.9 seconds. The C6 Corvette Z06 was also slower with a lap time of seven minutes, 42.99 seconds.

The 2014 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 is expected to launch next spring. If the lap times are an indication, we’re pretty sure Chevy is happy with its latest muscle car.
