Anne Hathaway Stars In One-Woman Off-Broadway Show

This week, Anne Hathaway shifted from her recent cinema success with Interstellar to the award-winning one-woman play, Grounded. The role marks a return to The Public Theater and Off-Broadway for Hathaway, who was last seen in their 2009 Shakespeare in the Park production of Twelfth Night.

It’s a brave move for Anne, considering the play is essentially a 70-minute monologue. But Hathaway’s never been one to shy away from a challenge — Anne dropped 25lbs on a starvation diet and had her long, beautiful locks hacked off with a knife for the part of the working, single-mother turned prostitute, Fantine, in 2012’s Les Miserables. Hathaway’s dedication, passion, and “I Dreamed A Dream” performance were enough to win her an Oscar.

Anne’s part in Grounded explores how a female fighter pilot copes with the way her life dramatically changes when a surprise pregnancy takes her out of her plane in the Middle East and thrusts her into a situation where she must reconcile family life with a job that now involves piloting a drone and eliminating targets on a screen, rather than from the mentally safe distance of an aircraft. With a Fringe First award at the Edinburgh Festival, an extended run at London’s Gate Theatre and international acclaim, the George Brant play has already more than proven itself. But with the mix of Academy-award winner Anne Hathaway as the star and Oscar nominated, two-time Tony winner Julie Taymor as director, it’s sure to take off.

In an interview with Playbill, The Public Theater’s artistic director, Oskar Eustis, had this to say.

“Anne Hathaway and Julie Taymor are amazing, unique artists and we are honored to produce them at The Public Theater. Grounded is a brilliant and important play, a meditation on the human and moral costs of our astonishing military technology. This promises to be an unforgettable theatrical event and an important addition to our national conversation.”

In addition to Hathaway’s bravery, dedication, and passion, Anne has also proven that she can have fun, as evidenced by her recent spot-on lip-sync performance of Miley Cyrus’ “Wrecking Ball.” Wearing high-waisted white underwear and swinging from an actual wrecking ball, Hathaway shows her trademark intensity, but Anne’s sass really shines through when she flips a certain finger at her The Devil Wears Prada co-star and opponent, Emily Blunt. This contest airs on Lip Sync Battle tonight on Spike.

Catch Grounded at the Anspacher Theater. Previews began on April 7. The show officially starts on April 26 and runs to May 17.
