Fired Ferguson Court Clerk Mary Ann Twitty: Losing Job For Sending Racist Emails Was ‘Just Like Being Raped’

Mary Ann Twitty, the fired Ferguson City Court Clerk terminated because of racist emails she sent to colleagues, has news for rape victims.

She knows exactly what you’re going through.

That’s because, she tells KMOV, investigators latched on to racist emails she’d sent and made her a scapegoat for an increasingly tense situation.

“It took me a while to get over the feeling of being raped and being thrown under the bus,” she said in the first interview since her termination. “I feel like I was the sacrificial lamb.”

Twitty was fired after a Justice Department investigation unearthed some messages that she’d sent or forwarded to other colleagues and friends.

In one image, former President Ronald Reagan can be seen feeding a bottle of milk to a baby chimpanzee. The caption reads, “Rare photo of Ronald Reagan babysitting Barack Obama in early 1962.”

Another joke that she forwarded to colleagues stated the following.

“A black woman in New Orleans was admitted into the hospital [for] pregnancy termination. Two weeks later she received a check for $5,000. She phoned the hospital to ask who it was from. The hospital said, ‘Crimestoppers.'”

And if that wasn’t enough, she also forwarded this image.

Mary Ann Twitty did acknowledge to KMOV that the racist emails looked bad looking back on it, but they are not an indication of her character.

“It’s ruined my name, it’s devastated me,” Twitty said. “I’m not that person that they’re saying I am… It’s not like I personally sent them out or forwarded them to the police officers to hurt anyone or be racist. Because I’m not racist… I’m human. I meant nothing bad by it.”

Here’s a bit more from the interview.

Given the contents of the racist emails, it’s unlikely that Twitty will be in a position to rebuild her life any time soon, but drawing parallels to her situation, which many believe was of her own doing, and rape victims, will likely make the problem worse for her especially after seeing how listeners are responding.

“Racist trash,” said one commenter on the Mediaite website. “Go away now and be quiet for once; you were fired for cause, not raped. Everyone does not do this. You and your bigoted friends do this.”

What do you think of the emails that this city court clerk was fired for sending? Is it fair that Mary Ann Twitty has received and continues to receive such public scrutiny? Is her life truly “ruined”? Share your thoughts in the comments section.
