James Corden, the new host of CBS’s The Late Late Show, seems to be giving Jimmy Fallon a run for his money with his recent introduction into the late show circuit and the emergence of entertaining viral videos. First, he and Tom Hanks reenacted the actor’s entire movie career, and now he and Mariah Carey have a carpool karaoke session? Your move, Fallon.
Carey accompanied Corden on his drive to work through the traffic of Los Angeles on Wednesday. But the Late Late host had a hidden agenda — his playlist was cued up with the pop diva’s hit songs.
When Mariah heard the opening bars of “Always Be My Baby,” she was on to him.
“See now, that’s not an accident. I know your act,” Carey chided. But soon, she was shoo-doo-wopping with her 1995 self before she caught herself and insisted, “I’m not singing today, I was up all night.”
That disinclination didn’t last long, though.
Seconds later, Corden and Mariah (who currently has 18 number ones under her belt) were performing nostalgic time-lapsing renditions of the singers hits, from “Fantasy” and “Vision of Love” to “Thirsty” — only pausing in between for some small talk, accent impersonations, and a little light flirtation.
Enjoy the epic trip down memory lane.
