Joseph Gordon-Levitt is letting the music play and heading down to Fraggle Rock, as he will produce and star in a live-action version of the 80s cult show. The film will be released for The Henson Co., New Regency, and Lisa Henson.
According to Variety, Fraggle Rock is a film that many have tried making for the past 10 years or so. No one has ever really been able to get past the developmental stage, but Joseph Gordon-Levitt hopping on board has made it steam forward.
” ‘The first screen personas I ever loved were Henson creations, first on Sesame Street, and then on Fraggle Rock,’ Gordon-Levitt said. ‘Jim Henson’s characters make you laugh and sing, but they’re also layered, surprising, and wise. From Oscar the Grouch, to Yoda, to the Fraggles. I’ve never stopped loving his work, even as a young frisky man, and on into adulthood.’ “
Fraggle Rock debuted in 1983 and was a co-production from Television South (a British TV company), Henson Associates, HBO, and the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. New Regency took over the property in 2011 after Montecito Pictures moved away from it.
For those that aren’t familiar with the show, the Fraggles were cave-dwelling creatures that loved to have fun, sing, and teach kids some awesome lessons. They were always pestering the always busy and construction-oriented Doozers and avoiding the furry giants known as Gorgs.
Fraggle Rock: The Movie was first announced as being in development by the Jim Henson Company back in 2005. The Verge states that the original cast was actually going to be working on it, but then things fell through.
Gordon-Levitt getting involved could really make Gobo, Mokey, Boober, Red, and Wembley come to life on the big screen.
“Collaborating with Lisa Henson makes me confident we can do something that Jim would have loved. I’m grateful and excited to be working with New Regency on this project.”
There have not been a lot of details released yet on how Fraggle Rock: The Movie will be presented or even what role will be played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt. More news will be coming soon as the project hopefully keeps going forward.
Fans of the show are sure to flock to theaters for Fraggle Rock and Joseph Gordon-Levitt is hoping that a new breed of fans will catch on as well. The musical antics of the Fraggles are remembered and cherished by so many that this can only be a positive thing.
