Free ‘Evolve’ Maps Plus Paid Behemoth Monster And New Hunters Coming End Of March

The first of Evolve’s free DLC maps is headed to the Xbox One at the end of March, 2K Games announced Thursday. While PlayStation 4 and PC owners will have to wait a month for those, the four-versus-one shooter will also add the new playable Behemoth monster and four new hunters that will cost money, in addition to a free Observer mode.

The mixture of free new maps and paid DLC characters and monsters for Evolve can be a bit confusing. That’s a side-effect of developer Turtle Rock’s goal of keeping the game’s community together on each platform.

Everyone will be able to play on the two new free maps when they are released. This eliminates concern about splitting up playlists by map packs, which is a common problem with other shooters with DLC map packs. All players will be able to play against or with all of the paid DLC characters online or offline whether they purchase them or not. Turtle Rock says this adds “adding depth and replayability for the entire ‘Evolve’ community without dividing players based on what additional content they own.”

Here is the breakdown of what is coming to Evolve for the PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

Available March 31:

  • Two free maps (Xbox One) – “Broken Hill Mine” and “Broken Hill Foundry” will add “two distinct environments” to Evolve. Both will be available in all online and offline modes, including “Evacuation.”
  • New Behemoth playable monster – The Behemoth will be free for those that pre-ordered Evolve and will cost $14.99 as part of the Monster Expansion Pack.
  • Four new Hunters – These four new hunters are part of the $25 Hunting Season Pass or can be purchased individually for $7.50.
    • Torvald – a cyborg Assault character with a back-mounted mortar cannons and an autofire shotgun
    • Crow – a Trapper with a pet Batray that flies around the map to scout and allows Crow o see all the nearby monsters
    • Slim – a genetically modified combat Medic that is now more insectoid than human
    • Sunny – a Support character equipped with a mininuke grenade launcher and an eternally optimistic attitude
  • Free Observer mode – Allows a sixth player to enter a custom game to view the action by switching between the five players plus pets like Daisy. It is designed for live streaming matches and features a HUD that provides information on player health, survival odds, perks, the mini-map, and more.

Available April 30:

  • Two free maps (PS4 and PC) – The “Broken Hill Mine” and “Broken Hill Foundry” maps will be released to both platforms on this date. The delay is due to a timed exclusivity arrangement between Microsoft and 2K Games.
