A Cincinnati, Ohio, mother stands accused of aggravated murder for allegedly beheading her three-month-old baby.
Police took the suspect into custody yesterday morning when responding officers found the infant dead inside a residence in the city’s College Hill neighborhood.
Authorities have indicated so far only that the child died from multiple trauma and homicidal violence; the police and coroner’s investigation is ongoing. Further results should be forthcoming shortly.
“Sources told Local 12 News that [the suspect] severed her baby daughter’s head. It is not clear whether that caused her death,” CBS News affiliate WKRC Local 12 reported. Similarly, a source told Cincinnati’s WCPO Channel 9 that the child was beheaded.
Apparently some neighborhood kids entered the home and found the suspect, identified by multiple media outlets as Deasia Watkins, 20, with the baby’s body. Someone then called 911.
Hamilton County Family Services reportedly took custody of the baby earlier this month after a complaint of child neglect. “It is unknown where the child was placed or how Watkins came to be in custody of the child again,” WCPO added.
Watkins is currently undergoing a mental health evaluation at a local hospital.
Said the Hamilton County coroner, Dr. Lakshmi Sammarco about the death of baby Janiyah, “We’re going to go over the evidence that we have. We’re going to go over the evidence that we have, and try and make sense of this murder which, seems to us, is very senseless. We’re trying to do right by this child. We need to bring some justice for this baby.”
Local residents described the neighborhood where this gruesome crime allegedly took place as close-knit and community oriented. “Neighbors told WLWT News 5 they woke up Monday to a crime scene in the neighborhood, with crime tape, police and paramedics going in and out of the home. But they said it is normally a quiet neighborhood.”
As the Inquisitr has separately reported, an autopsy has confirmed that a Chicago grandmother allegedly used a power saw to cut her seven-month-old granddaughter’s throat after she was already dead due to suffocation and blunt force trauma to the head. Back in 2013, a suburban Chicago grandma allegedly murdered her six-month-old granddaughter by striking the infant with a sledgehammer and then slitting her throat.
Added: The suspect in the Ohio baby beheading “wasn’t supposed to be near the child because she was considered a threat to the baby’s safety. Juvenile Court records show that a judge ordered children’s services to take custody of the baby on March 6 after her mother, Deasia Watkins, was hospitalized for psychiatric problems, which included acting irrationally and speaking of demons,” Cincinnati.com reported.
