A Charlotte Man Has Been Standing Naked In His Doorway, Upsetting His Neighbors – Cops Say He’s Doing Nothing Wrong

Residents of a Charlotte, North Carolina neighborhood have had it up to here with a neighbor who stands naked in his doorway, several times per day, and has been doing so for at least the past ten years, The Charlotte Observer is reporting.

However, Charlotte police say there’s nothing they can do about the naked neighbor, who’s been known to stand naked in his doorway and carry on cell phone conversations while in the buff. They’ve been called to the address several times – most recently last Friday, according to neighbor Pecolia Threatt.

“I was out rolling the trash can on Friday and I just happened to look over there and he was standing there buck naked. It’s not good to have people walking around here naked like that a grown man like that with all these kids out here you know.”

But since North Carolina Law allows you to be naked in your own home, even in the doorway, in full view of the neighbors, there’s no crime. The law says that a person can only be charged with indecent exposure if the person “willfully expose the private parts of his or her person in any public place and in the presence of any other person or persons.”

A Charlotte police spokesperson confirmed to WBTV (Charlotte) that police were called to the house – for at least the 30th time since 2005, according to Huffington Post – on Friday.

“Since it is not a criminal incident, it was documented in the ‘call for service’ but there is no report. After consulting with the magistrate and Police Attorney, unless he is outside of his home, he cannot be charged.”

Neighbor Adrienna Harris says that her daughter, like other neighbors, has taken to scoping out the neighborhood before going outside, in order to avoid having to see their naked neighbor.

“Because my daughter grew up in this neighborhood. Even this week, when she was home from spring break, she would call me at work and say ‘Mom, I’m getting ready to go outside, but let me check if he’s out there first’. That’s how bad it is in the neighborhood.”

Unfortunately, one of the realities of urban life is that there are bound to be bad neighbors. Stories of bad neighbors who hoard trash, harass children, or even spray-paint racist graffiti are all too common.

Resident’s of the Charlotte neighborhood where the naked man menaces the street plan to see if their Homeowner’s Association can somehow deal with matter privately.
