Iceland Reveals ‘Incest Database’ For Safer, Less Awkward Dating Practices

The population of Iceland is small with only 300,000 people currently living in the area, for that reason the possibility of dating someone you’re related to is very high, apparently high enough that a new website has launched to help detect possible “incestuous relationships” among Icelanders.

The website is called Íslendingabók which translates to Book Of Islanders and for all intensive purposes it’s an online resource that tracks 1,200 years worth of genealogical data surrounding the couple’s inhabitants.

To operate the website natives to the country only need type in their name and the name of their date along with their “Icelandic ID number” and they will gain access to the citizens only system.

Not only is the system a great way to avoid awkward family reunions, it can also tell the countries citizens if they are related to any famous celebrities which I assume they mean Björk. I only partly joke about the singer being the only famous person in Iceland but country, in an interview with Alli Thorgrimsson the Global Post learned that she discovered her relationship to the famed singer.

Alli also learned that his ex-wife is a distant seventh cousin.

The website has actually been active since 1997 and is a partnership with a genetics research firm and a software entrepreneur. The site has most recently come into the countries spotlight thanks to its extremely large database and modern search technology that can provide quick and accurate results.

Would you be afraid to check up on current significant others if the database was made available to you in a small area of just 300,000 people?
