Ian Somerhalder Bites Into ‘The Vampire Diaries’ Directing Debut Tonight: ‘Downward Spiral’ Spoilers [Video]

The Vampire Diaries has become known for its supernatural suspense, and part of the on-the-edge-of-your-seat drama comes from the expert directors. Now co-star Ian Somerhalder is taking his own turn in the director’s seat, reported Entertainment Tonight.

Ian directed “The Downward Spiral” episode, which airs March 12. Candice Accola plays a key role in the episode as Caroline.

So what’s it like to go from starring in front of the cameras to directing? Somerhalder is enthusiastic about his experience. And he credits his co-stars for their support.

“I’ve known this show for six and a half seasons but what I’m excited about is just being there with our team. These people are not going to let me fail. We just want to tell a great story and make it look really cool.”

Ian felt that directing is a bloody good time.

“The episode is actually a great episode,” he declared. “There’s a lot of fun stuff to do.”

Somerhalder praised co-star Paul Wesley for leading the way after the actor directed several episodes. He noted that Paul was generous in providing guidance.

“Paul is a phenomenal director. Actually, I absorbed a lot from Paul and he was really great with his information.”

So what can viewers expect? Spoiler alert: You can look forward to crazy cage dancers, drunk revelers, and even body paint that glows brighter than a vampire’s blood.

As the Inquisitr reported, Ian and his fiancee, Nikki Reed, are also staying busy away from work by becoming involved in charity work.

Nikki revealed that she and Ian share a passion for giving back, and they even spend time in bed discussing their dreams for changing the world.

“One individual can actually do something, can change the world. We do wake up in the morning and talk about those things. That’s the revelation that I’ve had in the last couple of years is understanding my role in this.”

If you’re a true fan of The Vampire Diaries, you might want to vote in E! News’ Top Couple Tournament. After counting votes, only four couples are left.

“Once Upon a Time’s Hook and Emma, Glee’s Kurt and Blaine, The Vampire Diaries’ Stefan and Caroline, and Sleepy Hollow’s Ichabod and Abbie [have made the final four].”

Want to associate the actors’ names with the characters that they portray before you vote? Stefan is played by Paul Wesley while Caroline is portrayed by Candice.
