Kid Rock’s ‘Made In Detroit’ T-Shirts Are Not Made in Detroit

Kid Rock is trying to get Detroit back on its feet by bringing the embattled city some revenue with his “Made in Detroit” T-shirt line. But Rock’s shirts are actually bringing jobs to India.

The Detroit Free Press reports that Kid Rock’s high-end T-shirt line is made all over the world, but not in Detroit. Susan Tompor investigated the line and found “Made in Detroit” clothes that were made in India, Honduras, the Dominican Republic, and even Ohio.

Tompor, a reporter for the Detroit Free Press, said that she was shocked and confused to find a company that boasts about its Detroit heritage to have its products manufactured in other cities. Especially since the Made In Detroit website is full of lines like:

“It’s Made In Detroit and for 20 years it has been the singular symbol for a city that’s not about to quit… it’s the official mark of a movement that belongs to all of us. Born to represent, this is Made In Detroit.”

But before anyone starts criticizing Kid Rock, Tompor notes that the shirts do bring a lot of good to the city. Kid Rock, who saved the brand from bankruptcy in 1991, doesn’t make a profit from the shirts. Rock has also started a scholarship fund that used the proceeds from a limited-edition Made in Detroit T-shirt.

Tommy Dubak, who runs operations for the Made in Detroit brand, said that the company currently uses about 10 manufacturers and that its hard to tell where exactly a shirt will get made. Dubak said that some of the shirts are made in the United States but some are made elsewhere.

Dubak also admitted to cutting out the tags from some of his T-shirts. Dubak said that he isn’t trying to trick people into believing that the shirts were made in Detroit, he just hates tags.

What do you think about Kid Rock’s “Made in Detroit” line? Did you think the T-shirts were made in Detroit?
