Planned Parenthood Gets $3M in Donations, Komen Does Damage Control After Flap

Well, the dispute that basically took over social media last week after the Susan G. Komen Foundation decided to defund Planned Parenthood is settling down, and the power of mobilizing over the internet is pretty well-demonstrated by the fallout of the flap.

Planned Parenthood has, on most accounts, won this particular battle of publicity, scoring an impressive $3 million in funding from pissed-off women on the web and a variety of other supporters. (At the height of the fracas, it was estimated that activity on social media favored Planned Parenthood and decried Komen’s decision at a rate of nine out of ten exchanges.)

A spokesman for Planned Parenthood confirmed to TPM that by the weekend, the donations had reached $3 million, saying:

“Over the last three days, Planned Parenthood Federation of America’s breast health fund has received more than $3 million from thousands of people across the country,” the spokesperson told TPM in a statement. “Every dollar we received for this fund will go directly for breast examines, diagnostic services, breast health outreach and education so that more women can receive this critical care.”

But as Planned Parenthood works on shoring up its breast cancer services for low-income women, Komen is dealing with the ripples from their decision to attempt to cut ties with the organization. During a conference call with media, Komen founder and Chief Executive Nancy Brinker said:

“We’ve always had the right to cancel contracts… You have to be sure you are granting to the right people.”

Do you think Komen can recover from their kerfuffle with Planned Parenthood?
