Lovelace producer Heidi Jo Markel says that while Demi Moore acknowledged a “personal crisis” as the reason she left her role on the upcoming biopic it wasn’t an easy decision for Moore to make.

According to Markel the 49-year-old actress was “devastated” to be leaving behind her cameo as Glroia Steinem

Speaking to PEOPLE Markel said:

“It was a shock and a concern for all of us. We got a call from [Moore’s representative] on Tuesday morning and said, ‘There’s been a personal crisis and we need to let you know that.’ And we were clueless. We had no idea what it entailed. We just knew she was out, that there was probably a health concern, and to move on.”

While the producers were shocked by the news of Moore’s hospitalization they say her health is more important and they fully understand why she backed out for her own personal reasons.

Taking over for Demi Moore in the Lovelace cameo is Sarah Jessica Parker.

In the meantime speculation continues to mount over what caused Demi Moore to fall so far into substance abuse with some insiders pointing to her failed marriage to Ashton Kutcher as the main culprit.

Do you think backing out of the movie was the right decision for Demi Moore to make given her current mental and physical state?
