Are Apple’s Latest iPhones Making Android Phones Irrelevant?

Apple may have faltered slightly with the iPhone in 2012 and 2013, but that has changed with the release of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. Apple Insider recently reported on the iPhone’s 47.7 percent market share.

“For the first time since the end of 2012, Apple’s iPhone edged out all devices running Android for shipments in the U.S., becoming not only the top device, but also the top domestic platform for the quarter. While the success of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus is unprecedented, this quarter’s performance also points to Apple having its strongest portfolio ever.”

Android phones have a 47.6 percent market share. The number isn’t bad, but it is on the decline. Keep in mind that right now there are more than five flagship Android phones from different companies while Apple has only two flagship phones: the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. Samsung Galaxy smartphones all run Android but have lost popularity over the past couple of years.

The iPhone may meet its match again with Samsung’s Galaxy S6, which is expected to be announced in early March. BGR, which received leaked pictures and specs of the Galaxy S6, reveals that Samsung’s next phone could bring back profits to the recently struggling Korean company.

“From a CPU that’s 50% faster, to an incredible quad-HD display, Samsung hit every angle with this year’s flagship phone. It will also have a payment feature which works with magnetic and NFC terminals, incredible cameras, and a gorgeous glass and metal body.”

Apple is currently preparing the successor to the iPhone 6. Macworld UK reports on some of the features of the upcoming iPhone.

“We’re expecting Apple to stick with the 4.7 in display for the iPhone 6’s successor, as it’s a display size that seems to have gone down well with fans so far. The iPhone 6s’s camera will have a two-lens system that could help allow users to capture DSLR-quality imagery.”

Apple will also have some competition from the HTC One M9, which is confirmed for March 1. Gotta Be Mobile has information on HTC’s flagship smartphone, which may be released in two different versions.

“The brand new HTC One M9 has been surfacing more and more over the past few weeks, and now it’s no secret that the company plans to announce its new smartphone on March 1st at the annual Mobile World Congress show. However, it sounds like they could announce two phones. Those being ‘The New HTC One’ and an HTC One Max, or HTC One M9 Max.”

As it stands, 2015 will definitely be an interesting year for smartphones. There is no doubt that Apple will still win market share with the current and future iPhones, but by exactly how much remains to be seen.
