A Texas college football player was charged last Monday with first-degree murder after police discovered the body of a transgender woman shot to death in her vehicle, according to Daily Mail.

Tyler police officials say they responded to a call regarding a single car crash at approximately 2:26 a.m. on January 26. Upon arrival, they discovered 24-year-old transgender woman Tyrone “Ty” Lee Underwood in the driver seat of a red Toyota Camry. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Underwood was shot three times, and police believes that her injuries caused her to lose control of the vehicle and crash.

The transgender woman was the only person inside of the car.

“I feel unreal right now. I just feel like I’m in a movie. It’s not true,” Antonio said, Underwood’s friend.

“It’s not even just one thing I can say I’m going to miss because it’s everything about him I’m going to miss. If it wasn’t for him I wouldn’t be where I’m at in life, and that’s just being belligerently honest.

According to People, Tyler police charged 21-year-old Charlton Ray Champion, Jr, a college football player, after they found evidence that he and Underwood met up on the day she was murdered. An interview with Champion’s father Charlton Champion Sr. also confirmed that the suspect and the transgendered women knew each other.

Champion Sr. also stated that his son “was supposed to get some type of sexual favor from the victim but realized the victim was a male.” This led Underwood’s friends and family to believe that it was a hate crime, but investigators have reported they are not treating the crime as such.

According to collected evidence, the two had dated briefly before the transgender woman was found shot to death. Police found messages between the two via KiK hours before the murder.

Apparently, Underwood suspected Champion of seeing another woman and as a result, no longer wanted to continue their relationship. Champion allegedly responded via text with, “That’s how it is now, I will make it up.” Then moments later responded with, “Na, I ain’t done I’m on my way up there, where you gone be at?!?!?”

Investigators viewed surveillance footage on campus, which captures Champion leaving his dorm room after he had sent Underwood scads of messages.

The jacket Champion was wearing in the video footage was collected as evidence and was tested positive for blood. However, investigators are unsure if the blood belongs to Underwood.

Before Tyler police issued a warrant for Champion’s arrest, he was already incarcerated for violating his probation.

He currently sits in Greg county jail for the murder of his transgender girlfriend on a $1,000,000 bond.
