Joran Van der Sloot Trial to Start in Peru

Joran Van der Sloot, charged with murder in the death of Stephany Flores, is due in court this week. The Dutch national originally asked the court for an extension to “reflect” on his situation and how he wanted to plead.

There are rumors circulating that he intends to plead guilty.

Van der Sloot is also the prime suspect in the disappearance of Natalee Holloway in Aruba back in 2005.

As far as his guilty plea in the Flores case, Van der Sloot has told the three judge panel hearing his case that he intends to plead guilty to the murder charge but not the “aggravating circumstances” he is being charged with.

Van der Sloot is charged with killing Stephany Flores in a hotel room in Peru and then after stealing her money and bank cards fleeing to Chile. He was captured in Chile and returned to Peru to stand trial a few days later.

Prosecutors in Peru went over their evidence before the three judge panel also. They plan on making Natalee Halloway a part of their case against him. She was last seen leaving an Aruba night club with Van der Sloot and another man 5 years to the day before he killed Flores.

It is theorized that he killed Flores after she saw something on his laptop related to the Natalee Holloway case.

Van der Sloot was arrested twice for the crime against Natalee Halloway but never charged.

If convicted of the murder of Fores he faces up to 30 years in prison.

Van der Sloot also faces extradition to the United States. In 2010, a federal grand jury indicted him for wire fraud and extortion. He took $250,000 from Holloway’s mother by telling her he would let her know where her daughter was.
