Romney Caught In Stupid Lies During GOP Debate, Gets Attacked By Gingrich And Santorum

Mitt Romney is generally considered a strong debater but he faltered on several occasions on Saturday in New Hampshire when facing off against Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum, two of his main competitors who had promised to “expose” him for various lies.

Early on in the debate Santorum asked why he [Mitt Romney] didn’t run for re-election in 2006 when his Governorship expired to which Romney said politics wasn’t his calling:

“I think it’s unusual, and– and perhaps– understandable, that people who spend their life in politics imagine that if you get in politics that that’s all you wanna do. That if you’ve been elected to something, well, you get– wanna get reelected and reelected.”

“I went to Massachusetts to make it different. I didn’t go there to begin a political career, running time and time again. made a difference. I put in place the things I wanted to do. I listed out the accomplishments we wanted to pursue in our administration. There were 100 things we wanted to do. Those things I pursued aggressively. Some we won. Some we didn’t.”

“Run again? That would be about me. I was trying to help get the state in best shape as I possibly could. Left the– the world of politics, went back into business.”

Newt Gingrich however quickly pointed out that almost the moment Romney left the governorship he began to eye the office of the President. According to Gingrich:

“You had been out of state for something like 200 days preparing to run for president. You didn’t have this interlude of … citizenship while you thought about what to do. You were running for president while you were governor. You were gone all over the country. You were– you were out of state consistently.”

“You then promptly reentered politics. You happened to lose to McCain as you had lost to Kennedy.”

In a second moment of blatant dishonestly Romney was asked about attack ads against Newt Gingrich which were being spread by his support PAC Restore our Future.

At first Romney claimed, “I haven’t seen the ads” but then only a few seconds later he responded “The ad I saw said you were forced out of the speakership.”

Romney then went on to list a bunch of the attacks as if he were an expert regarding the attack ads he just finished saying he hadn’t seen.

After the debate Mitt Romney spokesman Eric Fehrnstrom said Romney only meant that he hadn’t seen all of the ads and was only describing the one ad he managed to catch.

When you throw in the nearly $100,000 of taxpayer dollars paid by Romney’s staff to destroy all records of his time as Massachusetts governor even little fibs or confusing answers such as those during this particular debate can raise more questions that in turn could hurt Romney’s chances not only against his own GOP competitors but against a potential showdown with President Obama.

Romney was also attacked by Ron Paul but brushed off his comment, here’s an AP video of the event:

Do you think Mitt Romney tarnished his own image more by answering the GOP debate questions in the way he did?
