Report: Michael Sam Engaged To Longtime Partner

Michael Sam, the NFL’s first openly gay player, is reportedly engaged to his longtime partner, Vito Cammisano, amid the couple’s trip to Rome.

According to the New York Daily News, the 25-year-old Sam has been traveling Europe with Cammisano, tweeting pictures of the couple’s vacation in and around Rome. TMZ reports that one of 23-year-old Cammisano’s friends, who was on the University of Missouri swim team with him, tweeted her congratulations to the couple, adding the hashtag #vitoisengaged. Sam then reportedly liked the tweet, as recorded in a screenshot featured by TMZ.

Though neither Sam nor Cammisano have confirmed or commented on their reported engagement, the news coincides with Michael Sam’s 25th birthday. The couple, both stand-out athletes, attended the University of Missouri together, and met at one of Sam’s first college parties.

The pair began dating in 2011, after Vito came out to his swim team, though Sam remained in the closet. In a recent documentary about his life, Sam noted that while their relationship was great at first, the couple were challenged by the fact that Michael wasn’t open about his sexuality.

“When Vito came to my house, he had to sneak through in and out of the window,” Sam said. “Vito was getting really tired of that.”

Sam and Cammisano broke off their relationship temporarily, though the pair eventually reunited when Vito realized that Sam didn’t have anywhere to go that Christmas, according to the Daily Mail. The couple have remained together ever since, though they weren’t spotted in public until Sam came out this past February.

In May, the couple made international headlines when Michael Sam became the first openly gay player to be drafted into the NFL. Sam was chosen by the Rams in the seventh round of the 2014 NFL draft, though he was later cut. Picked up by the Cowboys and also cut from their practice squad, Sam is currently without a team.

Last month, Sam made headlines when he addressed the topic of gay players in the NFL. As the Inquisitr previously reported, Sam appeared in a one-on-one interview with Oprah Winfrey, acknowledging that other closeted players in the league had reached out to him.

Neither Vito Cammisano nor Michael Sam have released a statement about their reported engagement.
