Colt McCoy Injury Update: Browns QB Still Out with Concussion

Cleveland Browns quarterback Colt McCoy’s season appears over, finished after a brutal helmet-to-helmet hit dealt by Steelers linebacker James Harrison on December 8.

Though McCoy sustained a concussion from the vicious hit, he returned to the game after missing just two plays. However, since the hit, Colt has still not passed the required medical tests to be allowed to practice, making it pretty likely that he won’t play in Sunday’s match up against the Steelers.

“He needs to be medically cleared before he can practice or play and that hasn’t happened,” Browns coach Pat Shurmur said. “He’s not passing it, so whatever that means, until it’s passed he can’t play and it’s pretty cut and dry.”

While Colt will likely be a no-go for the Browns’ next game, Shurmer added that his quarterback is “doing much better,” has increased his physical activity, and is “taking care of what he needs to do to get back healthy.”

Shurmur did not provide specifics on what symptoms McCoy is still experiencing or give any details on what assessments the team gives players with concussions.

While many sports outlets have questioned the Browns decision to put Colt back in the game following the Harrison hit, the team has maintained that they followed proper medical procedure, although team President Mike Holmgren admitted McCoy was not checked for a concussion until after the game.

For the year, Colt McCoy has a 4-9 record and a 74.6 quarterback rating. He threw 14 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

Seneca Wallace likely will start for the third straight time in Colt’s place on Sunday.
