Pizza Hut’s Meat Lovers Pie Has Five Times The Amount Of Sodium Recommended

If you can’t get enough of Pizza Hut’s Meat Lovers pie, then you might want to read on. According to a survey from the U.K. Consensus Action on Salt & Health, CASH for short, the Meat Lovers pie is filled with an insane amount of sodium. In fact, the Pizza Hut favorite is so bad for you that the sodium intake is five times the recommended amount.

In addition to the Meat Lovers pie from Pizza Hut, the survey found that there was a high amount of sodium in takeout pizza, supermarket pizza and restaurant pizza.

When it comes to the worst offenders of pizza, Pizza Hut took the pie with Pizza Hut’s Stuffed Crust Texas Meat Meltdown. Additionally, they found Papa John’s Stuffed Crust Sausage & Pepperoni, and Domino’s Pepperoni Passion Hot Dog Stuffed Crust, were major offenders with 16 grams of salt. That’s almost three teaspoons of salt per slice.

CASH breaks it down for Pizza Hut lovers. Five pizzas were found to contain 16g salt — the equivalent of 7 Big Macs! Some countries are being fed twice as much salt from the same pizza as in other countries. Many pizzas now have more salt than they did 2 years ago.

In a press release, Clare Farrand, the International Program Lead at the WASH, was quoted in a press release.

“The fact that some pizza manufacturers are able to produce the same pizzas with much lower levels of salt demonstrates that there are no technical reasons why other pizza manufacturers can’t also do so.”

She continued, “We urge all pizza manufacturers to reduce salt in all pizzas to the lowest level in all countries if we are to tackle the huge and burdening problem of strokes, heart attacks, and heart failure.”

In another statement, nutritionist Sonio Pombo said, “Most of us aren’t aware of how much salt we actually eat on a daily basis, and thus the danger we are putting ourselves in. With three-quarters of our salt intakes coming from processed foods such as pizza, how are any of us able to choose a healthier diet? We need the food industry to help us improve our diet, not to hide 3 times more salt than is recommended in a day in a single pizza!”

The maximum recommended intake is 6g of salt a day.
