‘Game of Thrones’ Creator George R.R. Martin Sends Christmas Message To Fans: ‘I Know How Anxious They Are’

Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin dropped a sack of coal in many fans’ stockings. Hoping that a recent hashtag celebration of the holidays was in fact, a countdown to the highly anticipated sixth novel in The Game of Thrones pantheon, Martin took to his blog to assure fans that this was not the case.

According to USA Today, the rumors that the sixth book was completed started when Martin’s Twitter feed began flashing Game of Thrones memes from each house in Westeros with the hashtag #12daysofwesteros.

But Martin made it clear on his blog that not only was this not the case, but that it wasn’t even his idea or keystrokes that posted the Game of Thrones memes in the first place.

“The folks at Random House wanted to do a special promotion on Twitter, a ‘Twelve Days of Christmas’ with a Westerosi twist,” Martin wrote. “It sounded fun, and funny, so I said sure, and thought no more of it. It was just a little Christmas celebration.”

That’s when things took the inevitable twist in many Thrones fans minds: “Somehow, from somewhere, the rumor arose that the ’12 Days’ were actually a countdown… not to Xmas, but to the publication of THE WINDS OF WINTER, or the announcement of its completion and/or pub date.”

Martin immediately went on the offensive declaring the rumor as “not true” and emphasizing exactly how fans of the series will learn when the Winds of Winter novel is ready:

“I’ve said before, and I will say again, I don’t play games with news about the books. I know how many people are waiting, how long they have been waiting, how anxious they are. I am still working on WINDS. When it’s done, I will announce it here…When it is done, I will say that’s it is done, on whatever day I happen to finish. I don’t know how I can make it any clearer.”

Until then, Game of Thrones fans will have to settle for Season Five of the HBO adaption, which will air in the spring.

Bah humbug.
