WWE News: Dean Ambrose Tells The Story Behind The Shield’s Breakup

If you haven’t heard this week’s edition of Talk is Jericho with Dean Ambrose, you should definitely go check it out. Ambrose had a lot of interesting things to say, and one of which is how WWE hid their plans to breakup The Shield from himself, Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns until the very last minute, due to Ambrose, Rollins and Reigns being resistant to the idea in the past.

Ambrose said that WWE wanted to breakup The Shield back at the Royal Rumble, and wanted them to all face each other in a triple threat match at WrestleMania 30, but Reigns, Ambrose and Rollins all nixed the idea because, in their minds, it wasn’t the right time.

Apparently WWE had wanted to breakup The Shield several times before they actually did, but Ambrose revealed that himself, Roman Reigns, and Seth Rollins were always so negative towards the idea of a breakup, which led to WWE hiding their intention to have the faction breakup from its members until the very last minute to avoid resistance from Ambrose, Rollins and Reigns.

Ambrose: “They knew, I think, that if they told us ‘yeah, we’re going to break this up’… because, you know, they kind of did it before and it didn’t work out because they would always go back to us, the break up I mean. But I think if they had told us beforehand, ‘yeah, we’re thinking about just cutting this thing off’ that we would have been like… we wouldn’t have seen the forest through the trees, kind of thing. We would have been like ‘what? What are you talking about?!? It’s going so good. The t-shirts are out, we’re super popular, what’s going on, this is going so good. This is not the right time. We’ve got so much more mileage left in this.’ We would have like gone in and caused a big stink and it would have been like they would have had to talk us down.

“So it was all decided and we didn’t get told until like right before the show. They brought us in and it was like dancing through everybody and then it was like right to Vince, just right to Vince, right into the room. He was like ‘this is what we’re doing and here’s why.’ We knew that there was no fighting it and we could tell that it had been hidden from us until then. And we’re like ‘all right.’ And then they explained it to us a little bit more and then we’re like ‘oh, okay. I guess that makes sense, yeah.’ Because, essentially, there was no one for us to work with at that point, we beat everybody.”

Jericho: “Do you think they waited until just before the show on purpose because they knew you guys would cause a stink, or have time to think about it?”

Ambrose: “Yeah, because that way there would be no time for any resistance…. It was very abrupt to us. We all knew eventually… we all have a million ideas for what we’re going to do. We’re going to break up, we’re going to feud with each other, we’re going to do this and that. Of course we know that’s going to happen, that’s what we want to happen. We just weren’t expecting it that day. It was kind of a shock.”

Like Ambrose, most WWE fans probably weren’t expecting The Shield to breakup when they did. So, Ambrose is right, it was definitely a shock. Fortunately for Rollins, Ambrose, and Reigns, none of them have been the odd man out after the breakup, and all three men have been very successful on their own.
