Just weeks after Doctor Who show runner Steven Moffat revealed the Master had regenerated as a woman, the rumor mill is ripe with speculation that the Doctor could very well do the same when current Doctor Peter Capaldi vacates the role.

As reported by Wales Online , Moffat recently spoke at the Sky Women in Television and Film Awards. While, there he was asked why there couldn’t be a female Doctor.

Moffat replied, “Well, no one says you can’t.”

“It’s actually only since I took over the show that we have said it’s actually possible within the logic of the show.”

Moffat also pointed out that his first lines for the show when he took over in Series 5 had Matt Smith wondering if he had become a girl, noticeably not surprised by the possibility.

Current Doctor Peter Capaldi also recently spoke on the subject. According to Movie Pilot , Capaldi recently gave an interview to SFX, where he said , “There could easily be a female Doctor.”

With Michelle Gomez’s turn as Missy, the female generation of the master, the likelihood of a female Doctor seems stronger than ever. Furthermore, Doctor Who has always been seen as somewhat progressive when it comes to social views. A female Doctor would fit well within that framework.

In his speech to the Sky Women in Television and Film Awards, Moffat spoke about the ability for women to find roles both behind and in front of the camera.

“So I think it’s a good time [for women in television]. But maybe on the set it’s different, I don’t know. Maybe the way we portray women is different. There are things we could certainly get better at; a lot of things we could get better at.”

With a fan base willing to accept the change and the mythology needed to accomplish it already in place, the table appears set for a female Doctor in the near future. The Inquisitr previously reported that Capaldi has signed on to play The Doctor for Series 9, but beyond that, anything goes. Will Moffatt pull the trigger? What are your thoughts on a female Doctor once Capaldi’s turn is up?

Doctor Who is on break for a few weeks currently. The Doctor will return with the annual Christmas special on December 25.
