13 Pound Baby: Colorado Mom Expecting 7 Pound Baby Surprised By Size Of Newborn

A 13-pound baby was born to a woman in Colorado who was expecting her baby girl to weigh about seven pounds. According to USA Today, Alisha Hernandez went in to labor on December 4, and her baby girl was soon delivered by C-section. To everyone’s surprise, Mia Yasmin Garcia was 13 pounds, 13 ounces, and 22 inches long. Doctors arranged for the child to be flown to Children’s Hospital in Aurora because she was having respiratory difficulty and showed low glucose levels after her birth. She is now listed in stable condition.

According to 9 News, Mia’s other siblings — Britney Gonzalez, Ximena Hernandez, and twins Yulissa and Yuliana Hernandez — weren’t even close to her size. Even the twins weighed just 12 pounds combined.

“They’re all shocked that they’re seeing a baby like that. Even in the San Luis Valley, they were like whoa! They opened their eyes like they’ve never seen a baby like that,” said Mia’s dad, Francisco Garcia. “We thought it was going to be 11 or 12 pounds at the most. The nurse, she got shocked. She’s like come here! Come here! Come here! She’s like come here! Run! I went and I’m like, what happened? She’s like, well check out this! I checked it, and it was 13 pounds and 13 ounces.”

The 13 pound baby isn’t the biggest baby ever born, however. It seems that babies over 10 pounds make headlines, but that size isn’t as rare as you might think. A 19 pound baby is more unheard of in this day and age, but back in 2009, there was a story about a child who was born that heavy. As previously reported by the Inquisitr, the child, born in Indonesia, nearly tripled the size of other babies in the nursery.

“This heavy baby made the surgery really tough, especially the process of taking him out of his mum’s womb. His legs were so big. He’s got strong appetite, every minute, it’s almost non-stop feeding. This baby boy is extraordinary; the way he’s crying is not like a usual baby. It’s really loud.”

Many people are fascinated by large babies because they weigh as much as some 4-month-olds. It is somewhat strange to see a newborn that big, and while you might think these big babies are cute, people should keep in mind that there can be a lot of health issues involved with a child who is over 10 pounds. However, doctors are able to rectify most of these newborn ailments so that the babies can live happy lives.

And so 13 pound baby Mia may have to go right into 3-6month clothing, but other than that, she’s beautiful!
