Justin Bieber Leaves LA On Eve Of Selena Gomez’s AMAs Performance

Justin Bieber left Los Angeles a day before his ex-girlfriend Selena Gomez takes the stage at the 2014 American Music Awards tonight to perform her emotive, breakup anthem, “The Heart Wants What It Wants.”

On Saturday, Justin posted a pic showing him standing on the steps of a private jet, while seemingly making a cell phone call.

“What are we living for [?]” the heartthrob wrote in his Instagram caption.

Hollywood Life had claimed the Canadian planned to “surprise” Selena by showing up at Sunday’s AMAs in order to try and “win her back.”

The claim, like so many of the gossip site’s stories, was either based on incorrect sourcing or made up by the website to create a cheap, sensational headline.

Hollywood Life said Justin is “struggling big time,” but is “convinced” that if he sees Gomez “they can work it out. But so far she’s shutting him out completely.”

Shortly after the site went to press with that story, it was revealed Bieber was not going to the American Music Awards.

An insider close to Bieber’s team told the Inquisitr, “Justin will not be attending this year’s AMAs, and has no plans to surprise anyone at the event.”

A second source known to both parties, added, “Justin never intended to go to AMAs this year. Nothing has changed.”

Even without the sources’ denials, it’s not that surprising the “Confident” singer won’t be in L.A during the music event. It’s likely Bieber’s idea of a great night probably isn’t watching his ex-girlfriend perform a song that everyone knows is about him, and doesn’t paint him in a flattering light.

Selena’s “Heart” single describes her perspective of her on-off relationship with Justin, and reveals she felt drawn to their romance despite experiencing heartbreak. In a stark opener to the song’s video, she recalled being “in pain” and “completely shattered” by “something so stupid” related to the Biebs’ behavior.

While Bieber’s destination isn’t yet known, it looks like the 20-year-old returned to L.A. just to attend the joint birthday party of Hailey Baldwin and R&B singer Khalil on Friday night.

Sisters Kendall and Kylie Jenner and other mutual friends were also at the bash.

Before his brief stay in L.A., Bieber was seen in Rancho Mirage, near Palm Springs, with longtime pal pastor Judah Smith last weekend. He previously spent nearly two weeks with pastor Carl Lentz of the Hillsong NYC Church.

During that time, the star was spotted at numerous church services and Bible study meets.

As the Inquisitr previously reported, Bieber revealed he has stopped smoking marijuana during an online exchange with fans on November 16.

However, TMZ’s claim that he has embarked on a “self-proclaimed mission to spread the word of God,” hasn’t been stated by or confirmed by Bieber and is probably exaggerated.

While Bieber has reportedly quit weed and has been seen at more church services than usual, he still appears to be going about his daily life as normal, while receiving help from the pastors, Lentz recently confirmed to the New York Post.

Meanwhile, amid mounting excitement for the AMAs tonight, Selena posted an Instagram video on Saturday, during which she shared her thoughts on what she hopes people will take from her AMAs moment.

“More than anything,” Selena began. “I’m just excited that people [can] everywhere, who are feeling what I feel and feel that, will get to see that.”

The starlet added, “And I just want people to be able to relate to that.”

The 2014 American Music Awards touches down at the Nokia Theater L.A Live tonight. It airs on ABC from 8 p.m. ET.

Taylor Swift will kick off the show with her debut TV performance of her new single “Blank Space.”
