Ty Herndon Gay: Country Singer Is ‘Out, Proud And Happy’

Ty Herndon has come out as gay.

The country music star who topped the country charts with “What Mattered Most” and “Living In A Moment” in the mid-’90s revealed during an interview with People [via USA Today] that he is “an out, proud and happy gay man.”

Herndon admitted that he tried to keep it a secret during his musical career but he started to come out to his family and friends when he was 20-years-old.

Herndon, who is now 51-years-old, admitted to the publication that he has struggled with coming to grips with his sexuality though.

“My mother probably knew I was gay before I did. I remember sitting down with her and having the conversation. She was more concerned about me having a happy life. You have to be able to do that in your own skin, and [My family] has seen me struggle with being gay my whole career.”

The Nashville artist revealed that he finally recognized that he needed to share his sexual orientation with the world five years ago. And he has now decided to do just that so that he can help other homosexuals that are struggling across the world.

“During an Anthony Robbins seminar, I realized I had an incredible story that could possibly help someone’s son or daughter or grandchild’s life not be as difficult as mine has been. Maybe they wouldn’t have to go through as much pain and suffering. It’s time to tell my truth.”

Back in 1995, Herndon was arrested and charged with indecent exposure after he allegedly expose himself to a police officer. However the charge was ultimately dropped in exchange for a plea bargain.

But this wasn’t the only time that Herndon’s career has hit a snag. He had to spend time in rehab for drug addiction too. He now hopes that these issues are behind him though, and he believes that by coming out he can start to live a happy life.

“I have made a lot of mistakes in my life. They’ve been my mistakes and I own them. I’ve done a lot of work around forgiveness with people that I’ve hurt and people I’ve not been honest with because of my sexuality.”

Ty Herndon confirmed that he has been in a relationship with a man for several years now. While he also confirmed that his two ex-wives “absolutely knew” about his sexuality.
