Anna Wintour Defends Kimye ‘Vogue’ Cover: Says It Prevents Mag From Being ‘Boring’

Anna Wintour had some pointed words Monday night about her choices for Vogue. The legendary editor defended the “Kimye” cover that featured Kim Kardashian and her then soon-to-be husband Kanye West.

In doing so, Wintour implied Kimye are not “tasteful,” both bolstering Kimye’s credibility and offering them an apparent slap in the face. As reported by Fashionista, Wintour told attendees at a Metropolitan Museum of Art event that the Vogue cover was meant to keep an audience for the respected fashion industry magazine.

“I think if we just remain deeply tasteful and just put deeply tasteful people on the cover, it would be a rather boring magazine! Nobody would talk about us. It’s very important that people do talk about us.”

When the Kim and Kanye cover debuted last April, Kardashian called it “a dream come true.” She has recently made more news as a magazine cover girl, this time appearing naked on the pages of Paper. As the Inquisitr previously reported, some claimed the printed photos in Paper were retouched or photo-shopped.

The buzz around Kardashian proves her moves can generate interest. Wintour says keeping tabs on pop culture is part of the role of Vogue. She compares the modern-day Kim controversy to that over another once-divisive figure, pop star Madonna.

“I see the role of Vogue to reflect what’s going on in the culture. The first celebrity that I put on the cover of Vogue was Madonna, and that was considered completely controversial at the time, too. It’s such a long time ago probably no one remembers, but she was a very controversial figure. Now she’s part of the establishment.”

Although Wintour seemed to denigrate the Kardashian brand by saying Kim and Kanye are not “deeply tasteful,” she also praised the family’s ability to reach a wide spectrum of consumers. She spoke highly of Estée Lauder’s decision to sign Kim’s sister, Kendall Jenner.

“What a fantastic decision that was! They have a wonderful brand that’s very traditionally American, and they decided they want to shake it up and reach a different audience. Now and again one has to do things like that.”

The Daily Mail reported last July on the family’s muted reaction to Kim’s news that she had made the cover of Vogue, as seen on an episode of Keeping Up With The Kardashians. According to the Mail, Wintour had once said no reality star would ever make the cover.

As of Monday night, Wintour has no regrets about featuring Kimye, telling the Met audience that she’s on the lookout for a similar star.

“I hope another Kim Kardashian comes along this year!”
