Brazilian Cannibals On Trial For Selling Human Flesh Empadas To Neighbors

In shocking news from Brazil this weekend, three people have been put on trial for killing at least two women, eating parts of their dead bodies, and selling their flesh in empada-type pastries to their neighbors.

The suspects, who were arrested in the northern Brazilian city of Garanhuns in April 2012, are a man, his wife, and his mistress. They confessed to their crimes and have been awaiting trial for more than two years.

The Washington Post reported that the three cannibals reportedly lived together, and lured women to their house with promises of a job as a nanny.

The decomposed remains of two women were found in the backyard of the suspect’s house by police.

When they were arrested, they told the police that the reason they had abducted the women was due to the fact they belonged to a sect that preached and practiced “the purification of the world and the reduction of its population.”

The empada pastries, which were stuffed full with the flesh of the abducted women, were allegedly consumed by the three suspects, as well as their neighbors, including a child who lived nearby.

Following the arrests of the suspects, police found a 50-page book entitled Revelations of a Schizophrenic, written by suspect Jorge Beltrao Negromonte da Silveira. In it, he said he heard voices and was obsessed with the killing of women.

Silveira’s wife, Isabel Cristina Pires, as well as himself, and his mistress, Bruna Cristina, began their trial on Thursday as Brazilian judges try to get their head around the gory details of this bizarre case, and apply the fitting sentence.

When the trial opened, Silveira reportedly proclaimed, “I committed a horrible monstrous mistake. It was a moment of extreme weakness and brutality that I regret.”

Despite that open confession in court, it remains to be seen what punishment will be handed down to the trio, when the verdict for the trial is made.
