Sam Smith Leads 2015 People’s Choice Awards Race


Sam Smith shares the lead in nominations in the 2015’s People’s Choice Awards. The smooth, soulful sounds of Smith take the singer to the top of the charts and the award season this year. Along with actress Shailene Woodley, Sam has four nominations in the People’s Choice race. Nominations in all categories were announced November 4, 2014 in Los Angeles.

Smith is nominated for Favorite Male Artist along with Blake Shelton, Ed Sheeran, John Legend and Pharrell Williams.

Sam Smith, born May 19, 1992 in London, sailed to the top of the charts in the UK with his breakthrough hit “Latch.” Sam, openly gay, has catapulted his multi-octave R&B sound to the top of the U.K. Singles and the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 Charts. Smith continually accentuates his bluesy, jazz flair into the hearts of adult contemporaries as well as young fans across the globe.

Smith shares the nomination in Favorite Breakout Artist with 5 Seconds of Summer, Charli XCX, Fifth Harmony and Meghan Trainor.

A student of jazz vocalist/pianist Joanna Eden, Smith was a member of the Bishop’s Stortford Junior Operatics and the Cantate Youth Choir. Smith credits his “diva quality” falsetto melodic tone to the ladies. Sam’s influences include Amy Winehouse, Lady Gaga, Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey.

Despite battling OCD, obsessive compulsive disorder, Sam has been able to handle fame quite well. A bit of a pep talk before interviews and performances and Smith is ready to spread the blues to his fans all over the world.

Sam Smith is also nominated in the Favorite Song category for his hit, “Stay with Me.” Other contenders for this title include: Meghan Trainor’s “All About That Bass,” “Bang Bang” by Jessie J, Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj, Maroon 5’s “Maps,” and “Shake it Off” by Taylor Swift.

The fourth People’s Choice category that Smith dominates in is Favorite Album with In the Lonely Hour. Also up for the title is G I R L by Pharrell Williams, Ghost Stories by Coldplay, Ariana Grande’s My Everything and Ed Sheeran’s X.

The 2015 People’s Choice Awards airs January 7, 2015 on CBS. This will be the 41st time that the public votes for its favorite actors, musicians, movies and television shows. Public voting ends on December 4, 2014. Anna Faris and Allison Janney will host the show from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles. Will Sam Smith take home four awards? We will have to wait until January 7 to find out.
