‘Game Of Thrones’ Star Sophie Turner: I’m Not Marrying Benedict Cumberbatch
News of Benedict Cumberbatch’s engagement to actress Sophie Hunter set social media on fire but it seems there was some confusion for a number of fans. In their excitement, a number of fans seem to have misheard the name of Cumberbatch’s fiance — and Sophie Turner, best known as Sansa Stark in Game of Thrones, has been getting congratulations.
Cumberbatch announced his engagement formally this week. He’s marrying theater director and actress Sophie Hunter.
However, Sophie Turner quickly began being credited as the woman of Cumberbatch’s dreams, receiving congratulatory (and a few derogatory) messages across Twitter.
First: Congratulations to Benedict Cumberbatch and Sophie Turner on their engagement! That’s so exciting! #BenedictAndSophie

My condolences to Sophie Turner for thinking Benedict Cumberbatch has any redeeming qualities whatsoever

A few fans recognized their mistake on their own:
Someone mentioned to me today that Benedict Cumberbatch is engaged to Sophie Hunter. I somehow heard @SophieT and choked on my tea.

Turner quickly spoke up to thank everyone for the thoughts, but correct the mistake:
Thanks to everyone who is congratulating me but its another Sophie who is marrying Benedict Cumberbatch. Nice one guys haha

So, for reference, pictured in the tweet below, with Benedict Cumberbatch, is Sophie Hunter.

And this is Sophie Turner:
Not that marriages across age barriers never work, but Benedict Cumberbatch is about twenty years older than Sophie Turner (according to their respective IMDB pages: his and hers). E! Online places Hunter’s age much nearer Cumberbatch’s, with only a two-year difference. Here’s Cumberbatch’s engagement announcement, published by his parents in the Times:

The names Hunter and Turner are obviously quite similar and, with the success of Game of Thrones, Turner’s name has been hot on everyone’s lips for some time. Also, Cumberbatch and his fiancée kept their courtship quiet, not appearing in public together until this year’s French Open, according to CNN. Bearing that in mind, it’s a pretty understandable mistake. The error even showed up in a headline or two.
Still, while the Game of Thrones actress appreciates the kind thoughts and congratulations, she’d like her following to know that she’s not marrying the Sherlock star — as she says, “it’s another Sophie.”
There has been no announcement as yet about a date for the wedding between Benedict Cumberbatch and Sophie Hunter (not Turner).
