Mega Millions $321 Million Jackpot! Someone At This Gas Station Won It All — Powerball Up Next

A Mega Millions jackpot of $321 million, the eighth-largest jackpot since the multi-state lottery began 18 years ago under the name “The Big Game,” will go to a single ticket buyer who fills up at the discount gas station pictured above. The jackpot win was the first in the Mega Millions lottery since August 22, after 20 straight drawings with no new winner.

But 21 was lucky for the as-yet-unknown person who bought the one winning ticket out of more than 75 million sold for Tuesday’s election night Mega Millions drawing. However, if you held one of the 75,478,187 tickets that didn’t win the massive jackpot, take heart. You still have Wednesday’s Powerball drawing to look forward to, with its own highly impressive jackpot of $178 million.

Another New Yorker Also Wins $4 Million Second-Prize

The Valero discount gas station pictured above is located in New York’s Hudson Valley, in the town of Middletown, about an hour and 20 minutes drive northwest of midtown Manhattan. And as if those darn New Yorkers weren’t lucky enough already, another ticket sold in the Empire State hit the first five numbers, missing only the Mega Ball to win what would normally be a $1 million prize.

But that New Yorker bought the ticket with the Megaplier option, and with a Megaplier number of 4, that ticket buyer wins $4 million. So, overall, a pretty good night for New York lottery players.

Four other million dollar “Match 5” tickets were also sold in Tuesday’s Mega Millions drawing, two in Texas, and one each in New Jersey and California.

Unfortunately for that California Match Five winner, due to the state’s pari-mutuel payout system, that ticket will pay a little more than half of what the other four second-prize tickets will win — $597,933 to be exact.

Mega Millions Jackpot Is Largest Ever Won By Single Ticket Buyer

The historic Mega Millions jackpot is still less than half the total of history’s largest Mega Millions jackpot — a whopping $656 million payout that was split between three winning tickets on March 30, 2012.

But the $321 million jackpot does rank as the largest Mega Millions prize ever won by a single person. When jackpot rises into the stratosphere, ticket sales also spike, increasing the chances that more than one ticket will hit big.

Each of the top seven jackpots was shared by at least two winners.

Winning Mega Millions Numbers Yield Numerous Prizes

Even if you’re not that fortunate Valero gas patron, there are still plenty of other Mega Millions prizes. You can see a list of the prizes at this link. But first, check your Mega Millions ticket against the following, winning numbers drawn at 10:59 pm in Atlanta, Georgia.

Because the winning ticket was purchased as a Quick Pick, the winner will receive the jackpot cash in a single payment — meaning the total before taxes will be “only” $194.1 million.
