Going into Election Day 2014, Republicans were confident in their chances to take the Senate. The GOP had a a series of polls from key races indicating that they could take control of the Senate for the first time since Democrats won the majority in 2006.
“I think the wind is at our back,” Kentucky Republican Sen. Rand Paul said Sunday on CNN’s State of the Union . “I think people are ready for new leadership.”
One of the key race in Iowa now appears to have Republic Joni Ernst opening up a comfortable lead. A recent Des Moines Register survey showed Ernst with a seven-point lead over Democratic Rep. Bruce Braley, outside of the margin of error. Republicans also lead key races in Georgia, Louisiana, and Kentucky.
President Obama has taken a lead role in helping Democrats hold onto their shaky majority. The President has been stumping for candidates and trying to encourage turnout in what is often a down time for Democratic voters.
“This is straightforward. I got a simple message: We got to vote,” he said at a rally in Philadelphia . “Vote, vote, vote, vote, vote.”
