‘Till death do us part’ for Iowa Couple Married for 72 Years

‘Till death do us part’ literally came true to this couple from Iowa as both died holding hands exactly one hour apart.

Married for 72 years, Gordon Yeager, 94, and his wife Norma, 90, were involved in a car accident that sent them to the emergency room and intensive care unit with broken bones and various injuries. But even in the hospital, both were looking after each other.

Dennis Yeager, 52, the couple’s son, said:

“She was saying her chest hurt and what’s wrong with Dad? Even laying there like that, she was worried about Dad. And his back was hurting and he was asking about Mom.”

With their deteriorating condition, the couple were moved in a room with their beds side-by-side so that they could hold hands.

Gordon passed away first but his monitor showed that his heart was still beating. Apparently, the husband was picking up his wife’s heartbeat through their hands, according to the nurse. Norma died an hour later.

Dennis added that probably their dad was just being true to his word:

“Dad used to say that a woman is always worth waiting for. Dad waited an hour for her and held the door for her.”

The couple were married on May 26, 1939, the day when Norma also graduated from high school. They will be cremated and their ashes will be mixed together before burial.

With married couples divorcing as fast as they can, can you last for 72 years?
