Michael Phelps Arrested For DUI, USA Swimming Suspension May Affect The 2016 Olympics?

With Michael Phelps arrested for a DUI, the USA Swimming organization responded by suspending the 18-time Olympic champion for six months, which will effectively force Phelps to withdraw from the 2015 world championship competition. But many fans are already wondering if the long term the suspension has the potential to affect the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics.

If you want the original details for why police had Michael Phelps arrested, check out The Inquisitr’s original report. Although it’s speculated the DUI arrest may force the Olympian back into retirement, Phelps used Twitter to announce his intentions for the long term.

“I understand the severity of my actions and take full responsibility. I know these words may not mean much right now but I am deeply sorry to everyone I have let down….The past few days have been extremely difficult. I recognize that this is not my first lapse in judgment, and I am extremely disappointed with myself. I’m going to take some time away to attend a program that will provide the help I need to better understand myself. Swimming is a major part of my life, but right now I need to focus my attention on me as an individual, and do the necessary work to learn from this experience and make better decisions in the future.”

Unfortunately, the second DUI arrest violated USA Swimming’s Code of Conduct and the executive committee approved the suspension, which takes place immediately.

“Michael’s conduct was serious and required significant consequences,” said Chuck Wielgus, USA Swimming executive director. “We endorse and are here to fully support his personal development actions.”

U.S. Olympic Committee CEO Scott Blackmun said, “We think the sanctions are appropriate and we are glad that Michael is seeking help. We are grateful that nobody was hurt and appreciate the speed at which USA Swimming and Michael took action.”

According to The Washington Post, Phelps is now banned from participating in USA Swimming-sanctioned meets through April 6, 2015. The suspension will cause him to miss the 2015 world championships being held in Russia in August of 2015. This swimming competition also happens to be the biggest international swimming meet leading up to the 2016 Olympics.

Fortunately, University of Michigan swimming coach Jon Urbanchek believes Phelps goal for reaching the 2016 Olympics will not be harmed by the recent suspension.

“He’s going to be back,” he said. “Michael came back with an unbelievable attitude toward Rio. This is just a detour, and we’re going to get through this. He’s got a lot of people helping him.”

Even if the goal of reaching Rio de Janeiro is not harmed by the DUI arrest, according to the Associated Press, Michael Phelps will suffer a bit of financial hardship in the short term. His monthly stipend of $1,750 will be halted for six months, costing him $10,500. But his major source of income is through sponsors like Aqua Sphere, Subway, Under Armour, Omega and Master Spas, who have made him millions.
