Soulja Boy Arrested For Felony Pot Possession

Marijuana, its legal status and decriminalization are hot topics of late with more than half of Americans supporting legal reforms for the substance– but if it’s coming, it will be too late to help Soulja Boy.

The 21-year-old rapper and some associates are facing felony charges due to possession of the drug, and will be arraigned in Georgia after a late night arrest. Soulja Boy- real name DeAndre Cortez Way- and four friends were pulled over at around 2:30 am Tuesday while driving on I-20 in Carroll Country, about 20 miles east of the Alabama border.

Way was in the Cadillac Escalade with Gregory Allen Latimore, 56, Cameron Andres Wagner, 23, Dontay Lamar Bates, 27, and James Raymond Smith, 35 when the traffic stop occurred because of a “vehicle equipment violation.” A subsequent search turned up more than five ounces of pot, an unspecified number of handguns and a large sum of cash. All five men were taken into custody and said to be cooperative, but Temple Police spokeswoman officer Dana Rampy told reporters that any amount more than an ounce is considered an amount intended for sale in the jurisdiction- which carries far heavier penalties than drugs considered to be for personal use.

TMZ indicates that the cash found in the car was a significant amount- about $70,000- and spoke to law enforcement near to the case about the charges:

Law enforcement tells TMZ, all 5 men were arrested on charges of possession of marijuana, possession with intent to distribute, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

We’re told the Escalade Soulja was riding in was part of a car service — and the driver was one of the five men arrested.

The hullabaloo is part of a very eventful year for Soulja Boy. Just weeks ago the rapper apologized for offending US troops in a recent video, and at the end of July, he acquired a $55 million private jet.
