‘Steel Magnolias’ Remake to Feature All-Black Cast

When “Steel Magnolias” was released in 1989, it starred possibly the whitest cast ever assembled. Julia Roberts, Sally Field, Dolly Parton… But lifetime is shaking things up a bit with their “Steel Magnolias” remake by using an all-black cast.

The original movie centered around a group of women in Louisiana who spent a lot of time at the beauty shop. The all-star cast, coupled with the tearjerker story line, made the movie a financial success at the box office.

Deadline reports that the “Steel Magnolias” remake will also take place in Louisiana and will focus on the lives of a group of women. Producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron are hoping to assemble an all-star cast of black actresses for the new movie, but no casting announcements have been made yet.

The “Steel Magnolias” remake hasn’t been officially green lit yet, but Lifetime is reportedly doing preliminary work and expects to start shooting soon.

Here’s the trailer for the original “Steel Magnolias.”

Who do you think should be offered a part in the new movie? Halle Berry? Zoe Saldana? Whoopi Goldberg?

Do you think remaking “Steel Magnolias” with an all-black cast is a good idea? Will the made-for-TV movie be able to deliver the same emotional story as the original?
