‘The Hunger Games: Mockingjay’ Poster Teases Katniss Everdeen

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1, the first of a two part finale to the Hunger Games movies, has finally unveiled a poster of its pivotal protagonist Katniss Everdeen.

Sort of.

The first poster featuring Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen the Mockingjay shows Katniss from the back. Marketing for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay so far has been decidedly lacking in Lawrence’s Everdeen, something that has been both perplexing and fascinating.

However, it turns out the poster is simply a teaser for a larger reveal coming next week, with the following text appearing in the recently released #OurLeadertheMockingjay app:

Our leader the Mockingjay arrives on 9/10. #OLTM

Fans are anticipating that this is a date for a full trailer for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1, something that has been highly anticipated all summer. Young adult sci fi thriller The Maze Runner is slated for release on September 19, making the 9/10 date an online release on par with a theatrical trailer debut a week later.

Last week, Lionsgate released six character posters for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay featuring District 13 soldiers close to Miss Everdeen including Cressida, Messalla, Castor, Pollux, Boggs, and best friend and hunting partner Gale Hawthorne. Earlier this year, Lionsgate released the first teaser trailer exclusively at Comic Con in collaboration with Samsung. The teaser launched the “Our Leader the Mockingjay” aspect of Mockingjay’s marketing campaign, which had previously consisted mainly of propaganda films from the Capitol featuring President Snow, Peeta Mellark, and Johanna Mason.

The Katniss teaser poster partially unveils Katniss’ famous Mockingjay suit, the last of her wardrobe designed by her Capitol stylist Cinna. In the Our Leader the Mockingjay teaser, Katniss is seen walking through District 8’s makeshift hospital wearing a plain black military outfit. It was later revealed in a still from Entertainment Weekly that Katniss is wearing a black mockingjay pin, identical in all but color to the gold mockingjay pin seen in the first two films.

In The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1, Katniss struggles with her duties as “The Mockingjay,” the leader of the rebellion centralized in District 13, which was a district presumed dead by most of Panem for the last 75 years. In the poster above, the words “I am. I will.” are noted at the bottom, which is the line Katniss says at the end of the Our Leader the Mockingjay teaser trailer after being questioned about whether she plans to fight with the rebellion. In Mockingjay, Katniss only agrees to become the Mockingjay after securing immunity for herself and the other victors.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 will be released in theaters November 20, 2014.
