Both teams come into the matchup nationally ranked — Texas A&M at No. 21 and South Carolina at No. 9 — and are looking to make a statement with an early win.

The teams kickoff Thursday at 6 p.m. ET from Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia, South Carolina.

“They are probably a little bit like us that they haven’t had a bunch of superstars to talk about this preseason,” said Steve Spurrier, the Gamecocks’ 10th-year coach. “Their players are anxious to earn their way, just like our guys.”

For the Gamecocks, sophomore Darius English is taking over for Clowney after serving as his backup last year. Spurrier said the 6-foot-6 English is looking great coming into the season.

“Darius has had a really great camp and a great spring,” defensive line coach Deke Adams said. “Hopefully, he’ll get a chance to show it on Thursday night.”

For Texas A&M, Johnny Manziel will be replaced by Kenny Hill, a sophomore who beat out five-star freshman Kyle Allen for the starting quarterback spot.

“The experience of being here and watching how we do (things) offensively and seeing Johnny play has helped him,” said offensive coordinator Jake Spavital said. “He’s seen more than Kyle has right now and that was important. He’s our guy, and we’re putting all our eggs in that basket.”

Those who watch the Texas A&M vs. South Carolina game live online may need to consult with their game guides often. Aggies coach Kevin Sumlin said he hopes to throw a number of players into action to see what they are capable of.

“Our team is in a place right now where they’re excited to play,” he said. “There’s been enough said outside the program about what we are and the guys are anxious to get on the field.”
