Mark Your Calendars! Captain America 3 Hits Theaters May 6, 2016

Captain America: The Winter Soldier is the highest grossing film of 2014 to date, bringing in $259,746,958 in North America and an estimated $454,317,000 in other markets for a worldwide gross of $714,063,958. Unfortunately, fans who are eagerly anticipating Captain America 3 will have to wait quite a bit to get their fix. It was announced this week that Captain America 3 won’t hit theaters until May 6, 2016.

The movie’s production team will feature many of the behind-the-scenes creative minds that were responsible for the success of the first two Captain America movies. Brothers Anthony and Joe Russo signed on to direct in January 2014. Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely are also returning to write the screenplay. It’s rumored that Markus and McFeely began working on the script for the film in late 2013, before Captain America: The Winter Soldier even hit theaters.

At this point, little is known about the plot of Captain America 3 other than the fact that it picks up several years after Captain America: The Winter Solider. The Russo brothers have hinted that the film will blend elements from the first two Captain America movies and possibly feature MODOK. An acronym for Mental/Mobile/Mechanized Organism Designed Only for Killing, MODOK is a supervillain who initially encounters Captain America when he’s attempting to rescue SHIELD Agent Sharon Carter.

Fans have speculating that Bucky will be chosen to replace Captain America after Steve Rogers dies or leaves the Marvel franchise. It’s been widely reported that Sebastian Stan, the actor who played Bucky in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, has already signed a contract to appear in a total of nine Marvel movies. Another possible replacement for Captain America may be Sam Wilson (also known as Falcon), since both Bucky and Falcon claimed the title at one point in the comic book series.

In an interview with Sky Movies, actor Frank Grillo, who played Brock Rumlow (the alter ego of supervillain Crossbones), reports that he signed a contract for multiple movies and may be making an appearance in Captain America 3 as well.

We can also expect to see tie-ins between Captain America 3 and the new ABC series Agent Carter, which debuts in January 2015. Agent Carter follows the adventures of Peggy Carter, Captain America’s love interest. The Russo brothers have already signed on to direct several episodes of the show.

Captain America: The Winter Solider hits Blu-ray and DVD on September 9 and includes deleted seasons featuring Maria Hill, Alexander Pierce, and Agent 13. If you can’t wait until then, the film is currently available for instant digital streaming on Amazon, iTunes, and Vudu.
