Simon Cowell Predicts One Direction Will Break Up Soon, Twitter Not Happy

Simon Cowell believes One Direction is going to break up soon, and Twitter is furious. This wouldn’t be the first time the British critic has attempted to crush the dreams of young musicians.

Originally known as the one judge on American Idol who always had something bad to say to hopeful musicians, Cowell has had a reputation among the music industry as a “professional hater.” Much like world renowned chef Gordon Ramsay, Simon Cowell’s opinion is usually always feared, and he capitalizes on it.

Cowell even had a brief cameo in Scary Movie 3 poking fun at his fame as a harsh music critic, ending with a whole crowd gunning him down.

What makes this different is that Simon Cowell was the man who put the boy band together on X Factor and launched their career. Cowell claimed:

“Bands don’t stay together forever. I think they will make at least two more albums together and they are in the middle of one right now. … No, I don’t think that is going to happen for a while. Eventually I am sure they all will.”

While there is a certain logic to what Cowell said, there are some bands that never broke up, though most of them are in the rock category. Ozzy Osbourne, Metallica, and Megadeth are three examples of bands that never broke up, even though they did exchange a band member or two through the years.

Boy bands are usually only around for a few years and then break up. It happened to New Kids on The Block and N’Sync, and the fact that the man who created One Direction is predicting their eventual demise as a group is a little insulting to the fans.

Upon hearing about Cowell’s prediction, fans of the boy band took to Twitter to tell him he’s wrong. Using the hashtag #1DtoLiveOnForever, their myriad of fans protested Simon Cowell’s statement en masse.

The band’s public relations person has responded to rumors spawned by Cowell’s statement:

“There are no plans for Harry to release any solo music at this time, any writing that he is doing is for potential One Direction songs. It’s common knowledge that the boys write separately and bring to each other for the album.”

Harry Styles himself even weighed in on the possibility of going solo back in July:

“I’m 100 percent in this band. I still want to be touring with One Direction in ten years. I’ll be doing it until I’m old and people are telling me to stop.”

What are your thoughts on Simon Cowell’s prediction about the band he created breaking up soon?
